A fairly major event in space exploration is about to happen today. The Mars Rover Opportunity is going to try to descend into one of the large craters on the planets surface, the Victoria Crater.

If we're going to find water on Mars, it's pretty likely it will be there. And water is one of the key components to life.

I wonder if we are anywhere near ready to find life on other planets. What would we do if we found it? We have no way of know if it's senescent, and no consensus on where to decide on the value of living things. What if we find non-intelligent life out there. Will we just exploit it? I don't think there's anything complex living on Mars, but I my scientific ethics is wonder what will come next.

Metric system [Sep. 26th, 2006|05:02 pm]

We will eventually convert to the metric system from the english, as it really is the better system for converting and communicating. Nearly all scientific data is given in metrics. The first step is to know the common prefixes (there are more)

kilo 10^3
hecto 10^2
deka 10
deci 10^-1
centi 10^-2
milli 10^-3
micro 10^-4
nano 10^-5
pico 10^-6

The unit of mass is grams, volume is liters, distance is meters. Each step up or down the prefixes is a factor of ten. If you have 1 liter, it is 10 deciliters, 1000 milliliters, 0.001 kiloliters.

An adult would weight about 60-120 kilograms and be 160-180 centimeters tall. And you already know how much 2 liters is.

The head of a pin is 2 millimeters. Bacteria are measured in micrometers, viruses in nanometers.

Food poisoning is a catch all term for a lot of different infections. Most people assume that when they get sick, the last meal they ate is to blame. Many thing actually take a lot longer to show up. Here's some examples

most Clostridium- 8 to 22 hours
Clostridium Botulinium (botulism)- 24 to 96 hours
Campylobacter- 2 to 5 days

here's a chart with some more information.
